[The Anchor Drop Newsletter] Snail Mail? Really??/Custom Wedding Card

Snail Mail? Really??
Some may say that sending actual mail is for old people. It’s outdated. It’s not worth it. WHAT??!!
Have you ever seen the reaction of someone who just pulled happy mail out of their mailbox instead of bills, junk or yet another flyer from the HOA? That’s priceless! I’ve never met anyone who hates getting happy mail, just sayin’. Prove me wrong.
It’s a fast-paced tech-obsessed, disposable world. Often harsh, unfeeling, and impersonal. Do you end your day feeling a bit out of touch even though you’re so “connected?” How do you get past that disconnected feeling?
There’s no better way to make and keep connections than “snail mail” or as I like to call it “happy mail” since “snail” may imply something negative. Getting mail – REAL MAIL, not junk – makes you happy, and feeling happy AND connected can’t be beat, ‘nuf said.
The days of sending cards and letters through the mail are FAR from long gone - I will argue that point until the end of days. “Snail Mail” is anything but dead. How else can you physically reach out to someone without actually travelling to be near them? Snail Mail is a far more thoughtful and reflective practice than sending a text or email.
Letters have inspired and played a major role in the plot of many popular plays and movies. In the play Love Letters by A.R. Gurney, the main characters unfold through the cards and letters they sent to each other throughout their lives. Cherished written correspondence during World War II tells the love story of the author’s parents in Dear Jack, Dear Louise by Ken Ludwig. Most classic movies feature characters writing and receiving notes and letters as a significant part of the plot. And then there’s the much loved Sleepless in Seattle, The Notebook, Letters to Juliette, and The Lake House, in which notes and letters become pivotal characters.
We send cards and notes for some of the best and worse times in a person’s life. Always supportive, always well-received, recognizing pivotal life moments and vital to the history and legacy of a family. Our words will be remembered and cherished for years. Cards become keepsakes. A way to relive the moment or the time period. To reconnect with the memories of that time and to piece together our lives for those we maybe never got to meet.
While not as common as it once was, mail still brings magic. The excitement of seeing that hand-addressed envelope in the mailbox after a long hard day can’t be outdone. I’m here to tell you that sending cards and notes through the mail should become a “thing” again. Take the challenge. Combat the boring bills and junk mail and decorate someone’s mailbox with happy mail - it’s like adding fresh flowers to a room, always appreciated. No special tools needed, just buy a card, and a stamp and then use your favorite pen to write what you feel. Can’t get simpler than that. Add your own personality – doodle on the envelope or try out your calligraphy - the possibilities are endless.
Here’s the thing - happy mail, will never go overlooked – emails and texts can easily be ignored. The thrill of seeing that little hand-addressed envelope will stop anyone in their tracks. They’ll be compelled to pause their day to find out who sent this magical little envelope and what they had to say. A message sent with intention, hand-written with pen on paper adding to its charm. More personal than a text. Physical evidence of someone’s thoughts and aspirations, actually touched by the sender – priceless.
Look at you sending happy mail – good for you, way to go! Now sit back and think about that smile on their face when they open that envelope – 😊 – WORTH IT!
Remember the custom wedding card I teased about a few weeks ago? If you recall, the one request from this loyal and valued customer was to include the couple's two dogs who appear prominently on the wedding invitations - aren't they cute?
Well, this one was a challenge for sure - but I loved working on it! I did a little research about the wedding venue to get some hints on the direction of the card - Colorado, outdoor wedding, VERY visible mountain range nearby - and then I was off.
After re-drawing the two pups and cutting them, and the mountain range from my Circuit, well, the pups looked a bit rough.
I wasn't sure I was going to be able to work with this mess. This is what happens when you cut little pieces from thick card stock, but I decided to try to salvage them. Cleaned them up a bit and they worked just fine. Add some color, a little fancying up and this is what we end up with - what do you think?
"I love the rebelliousness of snail mail, and I love anything that can arrive with a postage stamp. There's something about that person's breath and hands on the letter." - Diane Lane

Sharing Makes You Vulnerable Sharing unlocks a new level of vulnerability. It is truly terrifying for me to put my work out into the world and sharing it on social media is that next level terrifying. Wading through that vulnerability can be draining. I am a private person and VERY few people truly KNOW me. I don't overshare, I curate what I allow people to know. That's not a malicious act, I have no intention of manipulating anyone, it's an act of self-preservation. I was born with the...
Finally, Sending Cards and Letters Is Cool Again! Truth be told, sending cards and letters was never really uncool, it was mostly relegated to sending birthday cards, but for some it was forgotten altogether and replaced with tech. I am so excited that the trend is swinging back towards all things analog. Yes, digital has its advantages, but there is NOTHING that compares to a hand written note from someone who cares enough to spend a little extra time and effort on you. Finally, the analog...
3 Things About Anchor & Inks Why The Anchor in Anchor And Inks? The anchor has held a special place in my heart my whole life. First and foremost, I am drawn to the sea - always have been. It's where I feel most at home and most myself, and the anchor is the most recognizable symbol of the sea. Second, it's all about what the anchor symbolizes. Anchors are steadfast, reliable, solid and hold true even in the worst of storms. This is the symbol that best represents the way I feel about...
