[The Anchor Drop Newsletter] Finally, Sending Cards and Letters Is Cool Again!/What To Write

Finally, Sending Cards and Letters Is Cool Again!

Truth be told, sending cards and letters was never really uncool, it was mostly relegated to sending birthday cards, but for some it was forgotten altogether and replaced with tech. I am so excited that the trend is swinging back towards all things analog. Yes, digital has its advantages, but there is NOTHING that compares to a hand written note from someone who cares enough to spend a little extra time and effort on you.

Finally, the analog activity of sending happy mail is catching on. I’ve been saying for years that nothing beats a hand written note in a beautiful card. Everyone benefits - you, as the writer, get to calm your nervous system and the recipient gets the thrill of receiving happy mail - and recognizing that they really do have someone in their life who truly cares about them.

I fully believe this "trend" should become a permanent practice in everyone's life. The benefits far outweigh the time and effort spent, and I will absolutely take this opportunity to sing the praises of happy mail while everyone is paying attention. If all of you will help spread the word, that may be all it takes to make happy mail a much needed part of everyday life.

By now I'm sure that you've noticed that analog seems to be everywhere! It's popping up in email subject lines and on social media - even in tv commercials. It seems to cross every genre from art classes to products - all touting the mental and physical benefits of going analog - something we have known all along.

People are clamoring for the "fix" to their overstressed and overworked minds and bodies. They are discovering that writing by hand is a repetitive motion - the exact thing that “experts” now say is so good for your mind, body and psyche - especially your nervous system that takes a beating on the daily.

But don't forget the benefits you get from sharing part of yourself with others. Sending your heartfelt wishes through the mail is no small thing. Making someone else feel good is a gift. You can feel good about choosing to connect in a more honest and meaningful way with those in your life.

Those who receive your cards benefit from a brighter day and are reminded that they are truly loved. Never discount the warm and wonderful feelings they get because you thought to spend time writing your thoughts in a card and putting it in the mail. Nothing compares to that feeling of seeing that little envelope in the mailbox, it's the best. Sure, it's more work than an email or text, but it is so worth it!

So why not take a digital detox. Go back to the good old days of communicating via mail. Yes, it’s a slower pace and takes some time and makes us all a bit vulnerable, but that’s the beauty of it all. That anticipation of someone receiving your card and then the anticipation of getting a card in return - taking it slow, and enjoying every minute to savor every word.

You already know that sending cards for any reason and no reason at all is a gift. It is still the most personal and heartfelt way to communicate. I appreciate that you are as enthusiastic about happy mail as I am. So let's keep this movement going. Take some time this weekend to send a card to someone just because. No real reason needed, just to say "hi" and to let them know what's going on with you. Encourage them to write back and to share a bit about what is happening with them. This could be the start of a happy mail tradition that carries on for a very long time - with both of you receiving all those great benefits. Give it a try, you never know.

Need to replenish your card supply? I can help with that! You'll find everything you need in my Shop. Write your list, start writing and have fun connecting and reconnecting with those most important to you.

What Do I Write
In A Just Because Card?

You can make your note short and sweet or you can list all the reasons you love them and are grateful they are in your life. The key is to craft a message you are comfortable with or suits the relationship. But, by all means, have some fun with it! Here are some ideas:

  • Life updates/funny things that happened to you recently.
  • 5 reasons they are important to you.
  • 5 things you admire about them.
  • Why you're so glad they are your friend
  • 5 things you should do together this summer
  • Reasons you would pick them to be in your life if you had to do it all over again
  • Thank them for something they did for you that went above and beyond.
  • And of course, you can always share favorite memories

Keep it light and easy, and always remember to write the way you speak. You can't go wrong with just being yourself and letting your personality shine.

Sharing Makes You Vulnerable Sharing unlocks a new level of vulnerability. It is truly terrifying for me to put my work out into the world and sharing it on social media is that next level terrifying. Wading through that vulnerability can be draining. I am a private person and VERY few people truly KNOW me. I don't overshare, I curate what I allow people to know. That's not a malicious act, I have no intention of manipulating anyone, it's an act of self-preservation. I was born with the...

Snail Mail? Really?? Some may say that sending actual mail is for old people. It’s outdated. It’s not worth it. WHAT??!! Have you ever seen the reaction of someone who just pulled happy mail out of their mailbox instead of bills, junk or yet another flyer from the HOA? That’s priceless! I’ve never met anyone who hates getting happy mail, just sayin’. Prove me wrong. It’s a fast-paced tech-obsessed, disposable world. Often harsh, unfeeling, and impersonal. Do you end your day feeling a bit out...

3 Things About Anchor & Inks Why The Anchor in Anchor And Inks? The anchor has held a special place in my heart my whole life. First and foremost, I am drawn to the sea - always have been. It's where I feel most at home and most myself, and the anchor is the most recognizable symbol of the sea. Second, it's all about what the anchor symbolizes. Anchors are steadfast, reliable, solid and hold true even in the worst of storms. This is the symbol that best represents the way I feel about...
